Lucy Karl

Bio: Before she received her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the University of South Florida, graduating with honors in 1986, Lucy Karl was headed in a different direction. Earlier, with a BA in French, she had been eager to put her French classes to work in the "real French world." She traveled to France to become an interpreter, but a visit to the Louvre quickly reawakened her childhood love of painting and drawing. French no longer became an end in itself, but a means to study and make art in France. After France, studying and making art continued in other European countries.

Upon return to Florida and acceptance in the cutting edge graduate school at USF, Karl pursued a double major in painting and drawing in the three-year program, as well as exploring lithography. She was praised for her natural ability to render the nude from life. But some faculty members were perplexed by Karl's deviating from the nude with two other preoccupations. One was a fascination with intricate patterns, both abstract and realistic, from sources ranging from textiles and architecture to conceptual images. The other was experimenting with diverse materials for the painting surface. Encouraged to focus in one direction, Karl solved the problem by combining all three obsessions into one new style.

The combination and exploration of these three elements - the nude, patterns and unconventional surfaces continue to evolve in Karl's present work. One element may take a temporary leave of absence, as the nude did in a recent series of large non-objective paintings. However, the nude is reintroduced in her present works, albeit in a revamped form.

Among commendations while in graduate school was selection in the "Faculty Choice Exhibition," the "Las Damas Award for Drawing," being honored with a one person exhibition "On the Surface/In the Studio" for the opening of the Stairwell Gallery at the USF Bayboro Campus, publications in the Omnibus, as well as being selected in every "Annual Juried USF Student Art Exhibition." After graduation, selected exhibitions include the "Tampa Biennial" - Tampa Museum of Art, "Art Fest" - USF Art Department, "Painting: Southeast," "The Bridge Show" - still and moving gallery, Tampa, "Women's Caucus for Art," "Taking Risks" - three person invitational - Soho South. Selected publications include the cover for Sanity Plea (Kurt Vonnegut) by Lawerce Broer and various issues of Tampa Bay Magazine.

When not in her studio, Karl teaches at USF, and in the past has held positions at University of Tampa and Florida Gulf Coast University. Circuiting Florida, New York, and the West Coast, Karl continues to create in her Largo, Florida studio.
